Reducing Loss of Life on Our Highways

 Mind Games

What would we do without IDA? Our lives would surly be changed. First, what is IDA?

IDA is our Guardian Angel. IDA runs our life makes decisions for us and makes life less demanding; giving us time to enjoy life and have some fun. Early in the Collision Avoidance Training program students learn about IDA and how as we grow older and gain experience behind-the-wheel, IDA even drives for us. IDA is our subconscious working 24/7 behind the scene. IDA opens doors for us, starts the car for us, tells us when to apply the brakes and when to accelerate.

As our teens learn to drive we are constantly telling them to pay attention, think about what you are doing and watch where you are going. When we are in the car with them we remind them to turn on the signal, check your speed and don't you dare forget to put on the seat belt. After a few trips we begin to notice they are doing these things on their own. Driving is a learned skill and just like hitting a ball, playing tennis or participating in gymnastics we need someone to show us how, we think about it and practice and the next thing you know it is second nature. Actually, IDA has learned and IDA is now doing it for us. We no longer have to consciously think about how to, our subconscious is doing it.

The mind is a magnificent gift, one of Gods amazing creation and is capable of processing a tremendous amount of information at one time. Information being sent from all five senses, being processed and stored for recall when needed later. But, as amazing as it is and while we can subconsciously process a tremendous amount of information at once, we are capable of only one conscience thought or action at a time.

Here's another excerpt from the CAT program... To make our point the classroom Instructor will tell the students; on the bottom of the page write this: "The sun is out and it is a nice day." Now the Instructor asks, how many of you had to stop and think how to spell "the" or "nice day"? How many had to stop and think which way to spell "Sun"? Please let me know now, so I won't get in the car with you. During the past seven years none of the students have had to think about how to spell the words or which spelling to use for sun.

So what happened? Just like you would do, the student is consciously recalling what the Instructor said, and like magic their hand began to move and the words appeared on the paper. Why? Because many years ago a teacher taught them how to spell the words and the difference between sun and son. The practiced spelling them and writing them and IDA processed the information and stored it for use later.

Just like many of the things we do in life, we must first teach IDA and then it all becomes second nature. Try the following links. They will help you understand your mind and how we drive.
